Panel V: Organizing Counter-Publics
24 March 2024
Conference Das radikaldemokratische Museum (revisited) [The radical democratic museum (revisited)], 21-23 March 2024, organized by Joachim Baur and Nora Sternfeld
Dortmunder U - Zentrum für Kunst und Kreativität, Dortmund (Germany)
Poverty and marginalization are evident in Siloé, a neighborhood of Cali in Colombia, as are pride, resilience, and community spirit. For more than 40 years, resident and activist David Gómez has been collecting, documenting, and reflecting on the history of Siloé's inhabitants from the "popular y pobre" perspective of the subaltern. The Museo Popular, the only museum in Siloé to this day, not only houses an extensive collection of objects, relics, and photographs that depict everyday life in Siloé, but it also played a crucial role in documenting the brutal state violence that occurred during the Colombian general strike of 2021. The detailed investigation work conducted by the museum's team around David Gómez led to the founding of the "Tribunal Popular en Siloé," a civil society tribunal focused on truth and justice.

The Tribunal Popular en Siloé stands for truth, memory, and justice—born out of the meticulous documentation work of the team around the Museo Popular de Siloé, which preserves the history of the marginalized and exposed state violence during the 2021 national general strike in Colombia.
